Armenia reaches two more finals at U17 European Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships

Armenia continues its successful campaign at the U17 European Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships in Samokov. On the second competition day, wrestlers from five weight categories entered the tournament: 45 kg, 51 kg, 60 kg, 71 kg and 92 kg.
After the preliminary bouts, the Armenian team secured two more finalists. Dzhanes Nazaryan will compete for gold in the 71 kg weight category, while Aleksan Shaldzhyan reached the final in the 92 kg division.
U17 world champion Dzhanes Nazaryan has been especially dominant throughout the tournament. In the semifinal, the Armenian wrestler earned an early 10-0 victory over his Italian opponent and advanced to the European final. Remarkably, Nazaryan has not conceded a single point so far, recording four shutout wins: 6-0, 8-0, 9-0 and 10-0. In the gold-medal bout, he will face Georgia’s Ramaz Basilia.
Aleksan Shaldzhyan has also been highly impressive. In the 92 kg semifinal, he defeated Azerbaijan’s Zograb Safarov 6-0. It was also Shaldzhyan’s fourth victory of the tournament without conceding a point. Earlier, he had won three bouts by 8-0, before adding a 6-0 semifinal win. In the final, the Armenian wrestler will face Poland’s Tomasz Mital.
Two more Armenian athletes remain in medal contention. Vazgen Vardanyan in the 45 kg weight category and Samvel Tonoyan in the 60 kg division will compete in the repechage block tomorrow and continue their fight for bronze. Narek Alekyan, competing at 51 kg, has finished his campaign and is out of medal contention.
The finals in these weight categories will take place on May 13. The final block is scheduled to begin at 18:00 Moscow time.

It should also be noted that two more Armenian wrestlers will compete in today’s final block: Zaven Mezhlumyan in the 65 kg weight category and Vahe Oveyan in the 80 kg division. Thus, Armenia already has four finalists at the U17 European Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships.
