The head coach of the Armenian national team, Yegishe Melikyan, who celebrated his first victory in charge against Ireland, announced that he will try to bring former captain Henrikh Mkhitaryan back to the team.
“Today I spoke with Mkhitaryan: I can’t say exactly what, but we talked. I am preparing to go to Italy to meet Henrikh face-to-face. I will try to bring him back. For now, I don’t know his opinion on this matter,” Melikyan told Petros Ghazaryan in an interview.
The 36-year-old midfielder ended his international career with Armenia in 2022. His last match for the national team was in November 2021 against Germany (1:4), where Mkhitaryan scored Armenia’s only goal.
The footballer has repeatedly stressed that his return to the national team is unlikely, promising to reveal the reasons for his decision only after finishing his club career.
Currently, Henrikh Mkhitaryan plays for Inter Milan, with whom he has a contract until the summer of 2026.
