Greco-Roman wrestler Eduard Soghomonyan is set to test himself in a new combat sports format. On May 15 in Las Vegas, he will compete at Power Slap 20: Trujillo vs Johnson, where his opponent will be American athlete Bryce Jones.
The bout will take place in the heavyweight division. According to the official Power Slap website, the event will be held at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. In the main event of the evening, Robert Trujillo will face Hayden Johnson.
Power Slap is a slap-fighting league headed by UFC president Dana White.
For Armenian sports, this will be a special moment: for the first time, an athlete of Armenian origin will compete in Power Slap. Moreover, this is not a newcomer to the world of sports, but an experienced international-level wrestler.
Eduard Soghomonyan was born in Yerevan, but in recent years he represented Brazil. He competed in Greco-Roman wrestling in the 130 kg weight category and took part in two Olympic Games — Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
Soghomonyan also has significant experience competing across the American continent. He won silver at the 2016 Pan American Championships, claimed gold at the 2015 South American Championships, and also qualified Brazil for the Tokyo Olympics through the Pan American Olympic Qualification Tournament.
For many years, Soghomonyan was among the strongest heavyweights in the Pan American region. In this weight class, he often had to compete against top wrestlers such as Cuba’s Oscar Pino and Mijaín López.
Now the 36-year-old wrestler will try himself in a new format. His opponent, Bryce Jones, already has experience in Power Slap, while for Soghomonyan this will be his debut in the league.
Power Slap 20 will take place on May 15 in Las Vegas.
