Sixteen-year-old Armenian wrestler Janes Nazaryan has received prestigious recognition from United World Wrestling. UWW included him among the best wrestlers of the month and named him the top Greco-Roman wrestler for May.
The recognition came after Nazaryan’s brilliant performance at the U17 European Championships, where he won the gold medal and went through the entire tournament without conceding a single point. The combined score of his five bouts was 37-0 — a clear sign of absolute dominance.
On his way to the title, the Armenian wrestler defeated his opponent from Romania 6-0, beat a wrestler from Moldova 8-0, overcame a representative of Russia 9-0, defeated an Italian opponent 10-0, and then proved stronger than Georgia’s representative in the final with a 4-0 victory.
Nazaryan’s recognition is especially significant considering the busy international wrestling calendar in May. The month featured the U23 and U17 Asian Championships, the senior Pan-American Championships, as well as the U17 and U15 European Championships. Among all these events, UWW highlighted the Armenian wrestler’s performance as one of the brightest.
Kazakhstan’s Rizabek Aitmukhan was named the best freestyle wrestler of May after winning the U23 Asian Championships.
For Janes Nazaryan, this recognition is another confirmation of his status as one of the leading young talents in Armenian and world wrestling. In 2025, he also won the U17 World Championship.
