Daughter of Former "Pyunik" Owner Leads Armenian Women’s Tennis Team to Victory

Alina Soghomonyan, daughter of former "Pyunik" football club owner Artur Soghomonyan, played a key role in the Armenian women’s tennis team’s second victory at the Billie Jean King Cup.

On June 17, Armenia defeated Andorra 2-1. Soghomonyan confidently beat Judit Cartañà in singles — 6:3, 6:1 — and later teamed up with Ani Amiraghyan to win the doubles match — 6:2, 6:1.

In an interview with Noah’s Ark, Artur Soghomonyan shared details about his daughter’s sporting journey:

“She trains with Tamara Olegovna Bizhukhova, an Honored Master of Sports of Russia, who, by the way, was named Armenia’s Coach of the Year in 2024 due to Alina’s success in several international tournaments. Alina herself was also named the Best Female Tennis Player of Armenia in 2024.

Until the age of 14, Alina represented Russia, but then we decided it would be better for her to play for Armenia, and she accepted RA citizenship. In 2024, when she had just turned 16, she joined the Armenian women’s national team and contributed two victories in the top international team competition in women’s tennis — the Billie Jean King Cup, which is the world championship for women’s national teams. She is the youngest player in the Armenian squad and competed in doubles alongside the oldest team member — 34-year-old Ani Amiraghyan.”

After two rounds, Armenia leads its group with two points. The next important match will be on June 18 against Malta.
