On October 10, in the Norwegian city of Førde, the ninth competition day of the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships took place. Medals were contested in only one weight category that day — the men’s 110 kg division.
The main battle was expected between two Armenian and two Uzbek lifters, but the Armenian team performed unsuccessfully.
Two-time Olympic silver medalist Simon Martirosyan ended his competition in the snatch, failing to complete any of his three attempts. His first two lifts at 185 kg were unsuccessful, and although he raised 187 kg on the third attempt, the judges did not count it due to an elbow lockout error.
Another Armenian athlete, Garik Karapetyan, successfully lifted 187 kg on his third attempt, earning the small bronze medal in the snatch. In the clean and jerk, Karapetyan confidently completed his first lift at 220 kg but failed twice at 224 kg, ultimately finishing fourth in the total. Thus, the Armenian team so far has only two small medals and no “big” ones. However, tomorrow they will have a chance at gold — Varazdat Lalayan is set to compete in the +110 kg category.
The main hero of the day was Akbar Djurayev from Uzbekistan. He successfully completed all three snatch attempts and set a new world record with 196 kg. In the clean and jerk, Djurayev lifted 232 kg, earning the gold medal and another world record — in the total (428 kg). On his final attempt, he requested an incredible 245 kg to set a clean and jerk record as well but could not manage the weight.
Another Uzbek lifter, Ruslan Nurudinov, aged 33, also delivered a strong performance, finishing third, just one kilogram behind 19-year-old Iranian Alireza Nasiri. The young Iranian surprised everyone by setting a junior world record in the clean and jerk — 231 kg.
