Armenian wrestler David Davtyan (70 kg) won a bronze medal at the U20 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Bratislava.
In the bronze-medal bout, Davtyan claimed a dramatic 7-6 victory over Egypt’s Mohamed Ahmed.
The Armenian wrestler was trailing 2-6 but managed to turn the match around. Davtyan first cut the deficit to 4-6 before scoring a decisive move in the final seconds to snatch the victory.
On his way to the bronze medal, Davtyan comfortably defeated his Bulgarian opponent 10-0, before beating a wrestler from Moldova 7-4. After suffering a 0-10 defeat to an Azerbaijani wrestler, the Armenian continued his quest for bronze, defeating his Indian opponent 5-4 before overcoming the Egyptian 7-6 in the medal bout.
The result gave Armenia its first medal in freestyle wrestling at this year’s U20 World Championships.
Armenia will have another opportunity to add to its medal tally today, as Henrik Haykyan (125 kg) will also compete in a bronze-medal bout.
