On September 15, the third competition day of the World Wrestling Championships in freestyle wrestling took place in Zagreb. Medals were awarded in four weight categories — 57, 74, 79, and 92 kg, while bouts began in the 65 and 97 kg divisions, with finals scheduled for tomorrow.
The new world champions are:
-
Chon Sun Han (North Korea, 57 kg),
-
Kota Takahashi (Japan, 74 kg),
-
Georgios Kougioumtzidis (Greece, 79 kg),
-
Trent Hidlay (USA, 92 kg).
A historic victory was achieved by 23-year-old Greek wrestler Georgios Kougioumtzidis, who defeated his American opponent in the final, winning Greece’s first-ever world championship gold in freestyle wrestling. His previous biggest achievement was gold at the 2022 European Championships — also Greece’s first European wrestling gold.
The final in the 57 kg category was spectacular. North Korean Chon Sun Han, trailing 0:7 against his Kyrgyz opponent, made a stunning comeback to win 12:9.
It was Chon Sun who had stopped Armenian wrestler Arsen Harutyunyan in the semifinals. Today, Harutyunyan fought for bronze and defeated Mexico’s Bravo Young. His medal became Armenia’s only award in freestyle wrestling at this championship. Now the focus of Armenian fans turns to Greco-Roman wrestling, which starts on September 18, with Armenia represented in all 10 weight categories.
The 74 kg final was no less dramatic: Russian wrestler Chermen Valiev suffered an injury and could not finish the bout, giving the title to Japan’s Kota Takahashi.
In the 92 kg category, American Trent Hidlay was losing 5:10 to Russia’s Amanula Gadzhimagomedov after the first half but delivered a brilliant second period, securing a second gold medal for the USA in Zagreb.
Full results, medal podiums, and semifinal lineups are the same as in the Russian text.
