Armenian weightlifters win first medals at 2026 European Youth Championships in Kosovo

Armenian weightlifters have won their first medals at the 2026 European Youth Championships, which are being held in Kosovo.

In the U15 men's 55 kg category, Grigor Aghavelyan won a small gold medal in the clean and jerk with a result of 110 kg. The Armenian athlete lifted 88 kg in the snatch and finished fourth overall with a total of 198 kg. Russia's Sergey Novozhilov won the category with a total of 202 kg.

In the U15 60 kg category, Samvel Adibekyan claimed the silver medal in the total at the European Championships. The Armenian weightlifter won a small gold medal in the snatch with 100 kg and a small silver medal in the clean and jerk with 118 kg. His total was 218 kg. In the battle for gold, Adibekyan finished just 1 kg behind the representative of Georgia. An athlete from Azerbaijan took third place.

In the U17 women's 45 kg category, Kristine Babayan finished fifth. She lifted 56 kg in the snatch and 68 kg in the clean and jerk, for a total of 124 kg.

Armenian athletes will continue competing at the European Championships on August 22. At 12:00 local time, Artur Petrosyan and Varazdat Harutyunyan will take to the platform in the U17 men's 60 kg category.
