Armenia opens home U20 EuroBasket campaign with a loss

Armenia’s U20 national basketball team had a tough start to the home European Championship (Division B), suffering a heavy defeat to one of the tournament favorites — Latvia. The game ended 45–97.
From the very first minutes, the Latvians confirmed their status as the strongest team in the group, showing high intensity and excellent finishing. Peter Dominguez's squad tried to resist, but the opponent’s class was too high. However, Armenia has more evenly matched games ahead.
Center Yura Melikyan was the top scorer for Armenia with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Gregory Gazaryan added 9 points and 3 steals. Other scorers included McColl (7), Kirakosyan (5), Agadzhanyan (5), Mkrtumyan (3), Karakhanyan (3), and Kilislyan (3).
For Latvia, Janis Jinemanis scored 21 points, Tomas Salnais 18, Rolands Sulcs 11, and Francis Neilands 10.
Armenia’s next match is tomorrow against Montenegro, who won their opening game against Estonia with a score of 79–77.
