Today, April 7, the 2025 European Freestyle Wrestling Championship kicked off in Bratislava. Five wrestlers represented Team Armenia in the tournament, but only one of them managed to reach the semifinals — Arman Andreasyan.
The reigning European champion, Arman Andreasyan (70 kg), began the tournament with a confident 10:0 win over Poland’s Mateusz Luschinski, and then defeated Ukraine’s Oleksii Boruta 4:0 in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Andreasyan will face Georgia’s Akaki Kemertelidze. They have already faced each other twice, including in the final of last year's European Championship. In both cases, the Armenian wrestler emerged victorious, though the matches were tense and competitive.
Results of the other Armenian team members:
Manvel Khndzrtsyan (57 kg) lost in the first round to the main favorite of the weight category — Russian wrestler Nachyn Mongush of Tuvan origin. The match was close, but Mongush won 4:1.
Vazgen Tevanyan (65 kg) started with a 3:0 win over Islam Guseynov from Belarus, but in the quarterfinals lost narrowly to Russia’s Ibragim Ibragimov — 2:3.
Hayk Papikyan (79 kg) lost early in his first bout against Ukraine’s Vasyl Mykhailov with a score of 0:10, and Gurgen Simonyan (97 kg) also lost 0:10 to Russia’s Magomed Kurbanov.
Despite the defeats, Manvel Khndzrtsyan, Vazgen Tevanyan, and Gurgen Simonyan still have a chance to enter the repechage and fight for bronze medals.
