After a goalless first half, England opened the scoring in the 55th minute. Declan Rice played the ball out to Morgan Rogers on the right, who delivered it into the penalty area. Anthony Gordon got ahead of the Argentine defenders and sent the ball into the net.
Lionel Scaloni’s side managed to turn the game around in the closing stages. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was unable to react in time as Argentina made it 1-1.
The decisive moment came in the second minute of stoppage time. Lionel Messi regained possession for his team and delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area, where substitute Lautaro Martinez headed home from close range to secure victory for Argentina.
England attempted to launch one final attack in the remaining minutes but were unable to find an equaliser.
Argentina have now won all six World Cup semi-finals in which they have played. In the 2026 World Cup final, the defending champions will face Spain, who earlier defeated France 2-0.
The decisive match of the tournament will take place on Sunday at the stadium in the New York–New Jersey region.
