Armenian representative Alina Charaeva (World No. 100) claimed a comeback victory over Czech tennis player Gabriela Knutson (WTA No. 164) to advance to the quarterfinals of the Valle d'Aosta Ladies Open in Courmayeur, Italy.
The second-round match, played on October 28, ended in a three-set victory for Charaeva — 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. The contest lasted approximately one hour and 43 minutes.
The match started poorly for the Armenian representative, who lost the opening set 1-6. However, Charaeva managed to turn things around. She significantly improved her performance in the second set, winning it convincingly 6-2, before securing the deciding set 6-3.
The victory was particularly important for the 24-year-old player following a difficult run of results.
Back to Winning Ways After Beijing Sensation
In early October, Charaeva made headlines at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing, where she stunned World No. 1 Elena Rybakina with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. The result marked one of the biggest wins of the Armenian representative's career.
However, following her impressive performance in the Chinese capital, Charaeva suffered three consecutive defeats and struggled to regain her winning form.
At the tournament in Courmayeur, the Armenian tennis player has found her rhythm again. In the first round, she defeated Italy's Enola Chiesa 6-4, 6-1 before overcoming Knutson in a challenging three-set encounter.
Charaeva will now continue her pursuit of the title in the quarterfinals of the Italian tournament. A strong performance in Courmayeur is also important for consolidating her position inside the WTA Top 100.
