Alina Charaeva and Elina Avanesyan reach the last 16 at the WTA 250 event in Iasi

Armenian tennis players Alina Charaeva and Elina Avanesyan made successful starts in the main draw of the WTA 250 clay-court tournament in Iasi, Romania. Both representatives of Armenia recorded convincing first-round victories to advance to the last 16.
Elina Avanesyan, ranked No. 224 in the WTA standings, defeated world No. 108 Moyuka Uchijima of Japan. The match ended in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
In the next round, Avanesyan will face Croatian player Petra Marcinko, who is ranked 45th in the world.
Alina Charaeva also produced a dominant performance in her opening match. The Armenian player, ranked No. 118 in the WTA standings, cruised past Andorra’s world No. 114 Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Charaeva will face the winner of the match between Yulia Putintseva and Ann Li in the last 16.
The tournament in Iasi is Charaeva’s first appearance under the Armenian flag. The tennis player recently obtained Armenian citizenship and now represents the country in international competitions.
