Agasi Agasyan Posthumously Awarded Bronze Medals of the 2014 European Championship
Former member of the Armenian national weightlifting team and multiple national champion Agasi Agasyan has been posthumously awarded bronze medals from the 2014 European Weightlifting Championships held in Tel Aviv.
The decision to redistribute the medals was made after the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) disqualified several athletes in 2019 for violations of anti-doping regulations. Following the revision of the results in the 85 kg weight category, Agasyan was recognized as a bronze medalist both in the clean and jerk event and in the total combined result.
The medal award ceremony took place during the Congress of the European Weightlifting Federation in Batumi, Georgia. The award was received by Samvel Gasparyan, Secretary General of the Armenian Weightlifting Federation. The medal will be handed over to the athlete’s family in the coming days.
At the 2014 European Championships, Agasyan originally placed fourth with a total of 345 kg. The third place at the time was taken by Russia’s Adam Maligov (367 kg), who was later stripped of his medal due to doping violations, and the bronze was reassigned to the Armenian athlete.
Agasi Agasyan tragically passed away in 2019 at the age of 30 as a result of a road accident.
It is worth noting that the 2026 European Weightlifting Championships will begin in Batumi on April 19.
