Armenian teenage tennis player Maria Azizyan continues to impress at the W15 Tsaghkadzor tournament, currently taking place in Armenia. Despite being only 14 years old, Azizyan has been competing successfully against much older and more experienced opponents, securing a place in the Round of 16.
Azizyan came through the qualifying draw with two victories. She first defeated an 18-year-old player from Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-1, before overcoming a 23-year-old Uzbek opponent ranked No. 831 in the ITF rankings, winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
In the first round of the main draw, the young Armenian produced another impressive result by defeating 22-year-old American Michelle Tikhonko in a dramatic three-set battle, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6.
Azizyan will now face a Russian opponent in the Round of 16 as she aims to reach the quarterfinals. The Armenian currently holds an ITF ranking of No. 1383 and continues to climb the rankings thanks to her strong performances.
Earlier this year, Azizyan also delivered notable results at tournaments in Antalya, further establishing herself as one of Armenia’s most promising young tennis talents.
Two other Armenian players remain in contention at the home tournament as well: 16-year-old Armine Yesayan and 32-year-old Ani Amiraghyan.
