Pyunik vs Debrecen: Time to End the Unsuccessful Run Against Hungarian Clubs

Yerevan’s Pyunik will face Hungarian side Debrecen. The Armenian club has a good chance of succeeding, but the opposition should not be underestimated.

Three years ago, another Armenian club, Alashkert, faced Debrecen in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Alashkert produced two strong performances and lost to the Hungarian side only in a penalty shootout.

Now it is Pyunik’s turn to test themselves against Debrecen.

The Hungarian club’s squad has changed considerably over the past few years, although the team’s overall level has remained largely the same. Balázs Dzsudzsák continues to be one of Debrecen’s key figures. The experienced midfielder is now 39, but the team’s performances still depend heavily on his form and leadership.

At the same time, the current Pyunik side appears stronger than the Alashkert team that came close to eliminating Debrecen three years ago. The Yerevan club has a stronger and deeper squad, giving it every reason to aim for a positive result.

Debrecen Have Lost Several Key Players

Debrecen underwent major squad changes during the summer. One of the team’s best midfielders, Tomáš Szűcs, left the club in a €2.5 million transfer. Top scorer Donát Bárány also departed, continuing his career in the Dutch league.

As a result, Debrecen’s squad has become significantly younger. It is now a youthful team led by the experienced Dzsudzsák.

However, these departures do not necessarily mean that the opposition has become considerably weaker. Debrecen have one of the best football academies in Hungary and regularly promote homegrown players to the first team. The club can always rely on a strong internal talent pool.

Armenian Clubs Regularly Compete with Hungarian Sides on Equal Terms

Pyunik genuinely have a good chance in the upcoming tie, but they should not expect an easy contest.

In recent years, Armenian clubs have faced Hungarian opposition several times in European competitions. Almost all of these ties have been closely contested, but the Hungarian teams have ultimately prevailed—by a single goal, after extra time or in a penalty shootout.

Last season, Pyunik lost to Győr, while Noah failed to overcome Ferencváros. A season earlier, Ararat-Armenia were eliminated by Puskás Akadémia. The list also includes Alashkert’s tie against Debrecen, which ended in a penalty-shootout defeat for the Armenian club.

In all of these encounters, the Armenian teams came close to succeeding but fell just short.

The upcoming match could provide an opportunity to end this frustrating run. After several evenly matched but ultimately unsuccessful ties, it is time for an Armenian club to emerge victorious.
