Armenian boxers enjoyed a successful night at the RCC Boxing event held in Adler on August 22. The biggest highlights of the card were Valery Oganisyan’s title-winning performance and another victory for unbeaten heavyweight Vartan Harutyunyan.
Valery Oganisyan (11-0) defeated Turkish boxer Ege Arin Konuk (15-2) to become the EBP champion in the super lightweight division.
The fight went the full 10-round distance. Oganisyan controlled the contest from start to finish, which was reflected on the judges’ scorecards. All three judges awarded him every round, scoring the bout 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90.
With the victory, Oganisyan maintained his perfect professional record and captured a championship belt for the first time.
Valery’s story over the past few years has been anything but typical for a professional boxer. A spell in prison in Mexico, subsequent deportation and nearly three years without a fight put his career in serious doubt.
After returning to the ring in Russia, Oganisyan took on several extremely difficult opponents. He entered those fights against boxers who were considered clear favorites, but repeatedly produced unexpected victories. His remarkable comeback has now been crowned with a championship title, while his professional record remains perfect at 11-0.
Unbeaten Armenian heavyweight Vartan Arutyunyan (13-0) also secured an important victory at the event, defeating the previously unbeaten Bashir Magomedov (11-0).
Arutyunyan dropped his opponent in the second round. Magomedov managed to continue, and the fight ultimately went the full scheduled eight rounds.
The judges unanimously awarded the victory to Harutyunyan with scores of 78-72, 79-72 and 78-73.
Vartan handed Magomedov the first defeat of his professional career while keeping his own unbeaten record intact. Arutyunyan now has 13 victories in 13 professional fights.
Two more Armenian boxers also recorded victories in Adler.
Oganes Ustyan (13-2-1) scored a stoppage victory over Evgeny Smelov (6-17-1), winning by technical knockout in the third round.
Arman Galstyan (8-0) also remained unbeaten after defeating Artem Pugach (4-16-4) by unanimous decision.
In total, four Armenian boxers earned victories at the RCC Boxing event in Adler, with Valery Oganisyan’s championship triumph standing out as the biggest achievement of the night as he continues his remarkable comeback in professional boxing.
