United World Wrestling has presented the official schedule of key tournaments in the Olympic cycle leading up to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The infographic below shows the full qualification pathway: from ranking events and continental championships to tournaments where direct Olympic quota places will be awarded.
The qualification stage will begin in February 2027. The first tournaments of the cycle will not award direct Olympic berths, but they will be a crucial part of the battle for UWW ranking points. At the end of the qualification period, the top three wrestlers in the ranking in each Olympic weight category, provided their countries have not yet earned a quota, will secure Olympic licenses for their NOCs.
The first direct quotas will be awarded at the 2027 World Championships, which will take place in September. After that, qualification will continue through the ranking system, the 2028 continental championships, continental Olympic qualification tournaments, and the final World Olympic Qualifier.

World Olympic Qualifier

Quotas: 1 in each weight category
The World Qualifier will be the final chance to reach the Olympics. At this tournament, only the winner of each weight category earns a license.

How Olympic Qualification Will Be Distributed
A total of 16 wrestlers will compete in each Olympic weight category at the 2028 Games. The qualification system is as follows:
| Stage | Quotas per weight | Total quotas |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 World Championships | 4 | 72 |
| UWW Ranking | 3 | 54 |
| Continental Olympic Qualifiers | 8 | 144 |
| World Olympic Qualifier | 1 | 18 |
| Total | 16 | 288 |
As before, the quotas are awarded not to individual athletes personally, but to countries — the National Olympic Committees.
Olympic Wrestling Weight Categories
Men’s freestyle wrestling: 57, 65, 74, 86, 97, 125 kg
Greco-Roman wrestling: 60, 67, 77, 87, 97, 130 kg
Women’s wrestling: 50, 53, 57, 62, 68, 76 kg
Main Takeaway
The new qualification system makes Olympic qualification longer and more strategic. Now, one successful tournament may not be enough: consistency, participation in ranking events, results at continental championships, and performance at the World Championships will all carry major importance.
For wrestlers, the most reliable path is winning a medal at the 2027 World Championships. But even without one, there remains a chance to qualify through the UWW ranking, then through a continental qualifier, and, as a last resort, through the World Olympic Qualification Tournament.
The Olympic wrestling cycle leading up to Los Angeles 2028 will effectively begin as early as February 2027.
