UWW Publishes Olympic Wrestling Qualification Schedule for the 2028 Games

UWW Publishes Olympic Wrestling Qualification Schedule for the 2028 Games
Wrestling 💬 Comment

United World Wrestling has presented the official schedule of key tournaments in the Olympic cycle leading up to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The infographic below shows the full qualification pathway: from ranking events and continental championships to tournaments where direct Olympic quota places will be awarded.

The qualification stage will begin in February 2027. The first tournaments of the cycle will not award direct Olympic berths, but they will be a crucial part of the battle for UWW ranking points. At the end of the qualification period, the top three wrestlers in the ranking in each Olympic weight category, provided their countries have not yet earned a quota, will secure Olympic licenses for their NOCs.

The first direct quotas will be awarded at the 2027 World Championships, which will take place in September. After that, qualification will continue through the ranking system, the 2028 continental championships, continental Olympic qualification tournaments, and the final World Olympic Qualifier.

2027 Tournament schedule

These competitions do not directly award Olympic licenses, but they affect the UWW ranking, through which a quota for the 2028 Olympics can be earned.

September 11–19, 2027 — World Championships

Who receives them: the champion, the silver medalist, and the two bronze medalists

The 2027 World Championships will be the first stage where countries can directly earn licenses for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

2028 Ranking-Point Tournament schedule

At the beginning of 2028, athletes will continue collecting ranking points. These events will be especially important for wrestlers and countries that did not earn a quota at the 2027 World Championships.

January 17–23, 2028 — Ranking Series
Status: ranking points

February 18–20, 2028 — Oceania Championships
Status: ranking points

February 24–27, 2028 — Pan American Championships

February 28 – March 5, 2028 — European Championships
Status: ranking points

March 6–12, 2028 — Asian Championships
Status: ranking points

March 14–19, 2028 — African Championships
Status: ranking points

After these tournaments, the ranking will be finalized, and in each Olympic weight category, 3 quotas will be allocated to the highest-ranked wrestlers whose countries have not yet qualified.

2028 Olympic Qualification Tournaments

After the ranking stage, tournaments will begin where direct licenses will be awarded through continental and world qualification events.

Continental Olympic Qualifiers

March 24–26, 2028 — African and Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament
Quotas: 2 in each weight category

March 31 – April 2, 2028 — Pan American Olympic Qualification Tournament
Quotas: 2 in each weight category

April 7–9, 2028 — European Olympic Qualification Tournament
Quotas: 2 in each weight category

April 14–16, 2028 — Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament
Quotas: 2 in each weight category

At the continental qualifiers, Olympic licenses are awarded only to the finalists. In other words, in each weight category, an athlete must reach the final — third place does not earn a quota.

World Olympic Qualifier

May 18–21, 2028 — World Olympic Qualification Tournament
Quotas: 1 in each weight category

The World Qualifier will be the final chance to reach the Olympics. At this tournament, only the winner of each weight category earns a license.

How Olympic Qualification Will Be Distributed

A total of 16 wrestlers will compete in each Olympic weight category at the 2028 Games. The qualification system is as follows:

Stage Quotas per weight Total quotas
2027 World Championships 4 72
UWW Ranking 3 54
Continental Olympic Qualifiers 8 144
World Olympic Qualifier 1 18
Total 16 288

As before, the quotas are awarded not to individual athletes personally, but to countries — the National Olympic Committees.

Olympic Wrestling Weight Categories

Men’s freestyle wrestling: 57, 65, 74, 86, 97, 125 kg

Greco-Roman wrestling: 60, 67, 77, 87, 97, 130 kg

Women’s wrestling: 50, 53, 57, 62, 68, 76 kg

Main Takeaway

The new qualification system makes Olympic qualification longer and more strategic. Now, one successful tournament may not be enough: consistency, participation in ranking events, results at continental championships, and performance at the World Championships will all carry major importance.

For wrestlers, the most reliable path is winning a medal at the 2027 World Championships. But even without one, there remains a chance to qualify through the UWW ranking, then through a continental qualifier, and, as a last resort, through the World Olympic Qualification Tournament.

The Olympic wrestling cycle leading up to Los Angeles 2028 will effectively begin as early as February 2027.
