Today, on September 20, in Zagreb at the 2025 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships, three last representatives of Team Armenia will take the mat. Each of them has real chances to fight for a medal: Karen Aslanyan (63 kg), Slavik Galstyan (67 kg), and Vigen Nazaryan (87 kg).

30-year-old Karen Aslanyan ranks 1st in the world rankings and is in the best form of his career. This year, he won silver at the European Championships and bronze at the 2024 World Championships. In Zagreb, Aslanyan will start from the round of 16, where he will face the winner of Sergey Emelin (Russia) / Leri Abuladze (Georgia). Both potential opponents are decorated wrestlers: Emelin is the 2018 World Champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist, while Abuladze is the 2023 World Champion.

28-year-old Slavik Galstyan is traditionally close to medals at every major tournament, but so far has been just short of reaching the finals. At the Paris Olympics, he finished 5th, showing a high level of performance. In Zagreb, his first-round opponent will be 22-year-old Kazakh Din-Mukhammed Koshkar, already achieving success at the senior level. Galstyan’s bracket also includes France’s Gagin Sndjoyan, a possible opponent in the round of 16.

21-year-old Vigen Nazaryan, the 2022 U20 World Champion and 2025 U23 European bronze medalist, will make his debut at the senior level in Zagreb. In the round of 32, he will face 24-year-old Norwegian Exaus Makubu, ranked 8th in the world and the 2023 U23 World Champion.

In addition, two more Armenian wrestlers who started yesterday will also continue competing today: Hrachya Poghosyan (60 kg) will fight for bronze against Serbia’s Georgi Tibilov, while Gor Khachatryan (72 kg) will continue in the repechage, aiming for a bronze medal match.
