Armenian Sports Institute students win European Chess Championship

The European University Chess Championship 2025 has concluded in Yerevan, bringing major success for students of the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport. They claimed gold medals in both the men’s and women’s competitions, becoming the standout winners of the tournament.
The men’s team celebrated a “double gold,” winning not only the main championship but also the blitz format. The lineup featured Shant Sargsyan and Mamikon Gharibyan. In the women’s section, Mariam Avetisyan and Mariam Khachatryan secured the top spot for their team. The squad was coached by Associate Professor Yervand Hakobyan.
This year’s championship brought together 40 teams from 32 universities across 17 countries, with around 120 delegates traveling to Armenia. The event was organized by the European University Sports Association (EUSA), the Armenian Student Sports Federation, and the Armenian State University of Economics, with professional support from the Chess Academy of Armenia.
The victory of the ASIPC students once again highlighted Armenia’s leading role on Europe’s chess map.
