Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli have ended their campaign in the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup. In the quarter-final, Eduard Spertsyan’s team suffered a 2-1 defeat against African Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns.
The hero of the match was Nuno Santos, who scored twice for the South African side. The victory sent Mamelodi Sundowns into the semi-finals, where they will face Mexican club Toluca or the Copa Libertadores winners.
Armenia national team captain Eduard Spertsyan started the match for Al-Ahli and played the full 90 minutes. The Armenian midfielder, like much of his team, was unable to make a major impact in attack.
SofaScore rated Spertsyan’s performance at 6.9.
Eduard Spertsyan’s match statistics:
- 1 chance created;
- 1 key pass;
- 2 tackles.
As a result, Spertsyan was unable to progress further through the tournament bracket and move closer to a potential meeting with PSG in the decisive stage of the Intercontinental Cup.
The midfielder now faces a long journey from South Africa to Yerevan, where he will join the Armenia national team ahead of their opening UEFA Nations League matches.
