Aras Özbiliz’s Words in Yerevan Ahead of the “Noah” – “AZ” Match

Ahead of the Conference League match between Yerevan’s Noah and AZ, Dutch journalists arrived in the Armenian capital. One of ESPN’s main interviewees was Aras Özbiliz — an Ajax academy graduate, former Armenia international, and currently assistant coach at Urartu.

Özbiliz, who earned 41 caps for the national team, decided to stay in Armenia after ending his playing career to help develop local football.

“I wanted to give something back to Armenia, perhaps precisely because I was born in Turkey and grew up in the Netherlands.”

He admitted that he tried to run for president of the Armenian Football Federation but faced serious obstacles:

“I knew it would be difficult, but I wanted to shake the system. The people supported me, but the clubs chose the incumbent president. The political influence was too strong. Nepotism? Yes, you could say that. I knew it existed, but I didn’t think it was to that extent.”

After that, Özbiliz focused on club-level work. Over a year and a half, he helped reorganize the Urartu academy before deciding to fully pursue a coaching career.

“I wanted to be closer to the pitch again.”

He is currently obtaining his coaching licenses and aims to build a serious career. At the same time, he does not rule out a future return to the Netherlands.

“I often visit the Netherlands during international breaks and holidays. We won’t necessarily stay here forever. I hope to obtain all my coaching documents as soon as possible and maybe secure a coaching position in the Netherlands.”

Speaking about the upcoming Noah vs AZ match, Özbiliz highlighted the potential of Armenian football:

“Football in Armenia is catching up. It won’t be an easy match for AZ. They need to consider the flight, the time difference, and the altitude. In such games, the crowd can truly be a factor. But to be honest, AZ is still one level above.”

The match in Yerevan will be an important test for both teams and another opportunity to showcase the progress of Armenian football on the European stage.

Today, February 19, Yerevan’s Noah will face Dutch side AZ in the Conference League Round of 32. It is the first-ever European playoff match in the history of Armenian club football — a historic milestone for the country.
