On September 7, the Republic of Ireland national football team embarked on a long journey from Dublin to Yerevan, where on September 9 they will face Armenia’s national team in the second round of Group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Irish side suffered a setback. Ipswich attacking midfielder Sammie Smodics will not be able to help his team in Yerevan. The 29-year-old player picked up an injury in the match against Hungary, which ended 2–2.
Smodics has already left the squad’s camp. Head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has called up Shamrock Rovers defender Josh Honohan instead, who has yet to make his debut for the senior national team.
It should be noted that earlier Ireland also lost their main striker Troy Parrott to injury.
