Armenia U20 begin European Championship campaign with defeat to Iceland

The Armenia U20 men's basketball team suffered a defeat in its opening game of the 2026 FIBA U20 European Championship Division B. Armenia lost 63–97 to Iceland, one of the tournament favourites.

Despite the final margin, Armenia produced a competitive performance in the first half. The Armenian team even led by four points after the halftime break, but the third quarter proved decisive. Iceland took complete control of the game, produced a powerful run and built a commanding advantage, which they extended during the final ten minutes.

Iceland competed in the elite Division A until recently and were relegated only last year. They are therefore considered one of the leading contenders to win Division B and earn promotion back to the top tier of European youth basketball.

California-based Stephan Karibyan was Armenia's leading scorer with 16 points. Jahmel Bruce added 13 points, while Xavier Kilislian finished with 12.

Armenia will play its next tournament game against Portugal on July 11. Portugal opened its campaign with an 84–69 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
