Armenia’s national weightlifting team has returned to Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan after a historic triumph at the 2025 European Championships held in Chișinău, Moldova. Both the men's and women's teams won the team classification, scoring the highest number of points among all participating countries.
Medal Record
Armenia not only topped the overall rankings but also claimed the most medals — 10 golds in total results and 27 medals overall, including small medals in the snatch and clean & jerk.
European champions from the team include Garik Karapetyan (under 109 kg) and Varazdat Lalayan (over 109 kg), who delivered strong and confident performances on the platform.
Airport Emotions
Hundreds of fans and journalists welcomed the athletes at the airport. Some weightlifters shared their emotions right upon arrival.
Gor Saakyan (silver, 73 kg):
"I'm satisfied with my performance, though I was aiming for gold. Still, the result is good, and this is only the beginning. I’ll keep working hard."
Garik Karapetyan (gold, 109 kg):
"After my injury, there was little time to prepare — just two training camps. But hard work paid off. I'm really happy to become European champion."
Aleksandra Grigoryan (silver, 55 kg):
"I did better in training than on the platform. But I still came home with a medal, and that’s what matters. I’ll try to take revenge in the next tournaments."
Anna Amroyan (silver, 76 kg):
"This is my first senior-level medal, and it gives me confidence. I'm very happy. This is just the beginning of the journey."
‘Fantastic’ Martirosyan and the Discovery of the Tournament
Samvel Gasparyan, General Secretary of the Armenian Weightlifting Federation, summed up the team’s performance:
"We achieved our goal — victory in the team classification. I especially want to highlight the women’s team: they hadn’t won the overall standings for 9 years. The real revelation was 17-year-old Anna Amroyan, who won her first senior-level medal despite undergoing surgery before the tournament.
I also want to highlight Simon Martirosyan — he lost over 20 kilograms, changed weight categories, and kept his strength, which is simply fantastic. Overall, I’m proud of the entire team."
