PSG and Atletico Reach the Champions League Semifinals
On April 14, the second-leg matches of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals took place, determining the first semifinalists of the tournament. They are Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico.
Atletico Knock Out Barcelona and Return to the Semifinals After 9 Years
Atletico lost to Barcelona 1–2 in the second leg but advanced on aggregate with a 3–2 score over two matches.
Despite the defeat at the Metropolitano Stadium, the Madrid side managed to hold on to the advantage gained earlier. The decisive goal secured overall success, and the team withstood strong pressure from the Catalans in the second half.
This marks Atletico’s first Champions League semifinal in the last nine years. Moreover, the Madrid club once again confirmed its successful playoff record against Barcelona — this is already their third victory in two-legged ties.
Team captain Koke said after the match:
“We are incredibly happy to eliminate such a high-level opponent. The team showed character and deserved this result.”
Dani Olmo was named Man of the Match, contributing an assist and playing an active role in attack.
In the semifinals, Atletico will face the winner of the Arsenal vs. Sporting tie (first leg: 1–0 in favor of the London club).
PSG Confidently Defeat Liverpool
PSG defeated Liverpool 2–0 away from home, bringing the aggregate score to a dominant 4–0.
The main hero of the match was Ousmane Dembele, who scored a brace. Both goals came from clinical finishing, especially under pressure from the home side.
Liverpool were active in the second half and tried to get back into the game, but the Parisians’ defense performed flawlessly. Under the guidance of Luis Enrique, the team structured their play effectively and confidently secured the victory.
Dembele was named Man of the Match. In the current tournament campaign, he has already scored 24 goals, eight of them against English clubs.
PSG defender Marquinhos commented:
“We knew we had to play with maximum focus. The team showed character and demonstrated how to perform in difficult matches.”
In the semifinals, PSG will face the winner of the Bayern Munich vs. Real Madrid tie (first leg: 2–1 in favor of Bayern).
