Mohamed Elsayed, the Egyptian Greco-Roman wrestler and bronze medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has announced his retirement from the sport. The 27-year-old, a multiple African champion and two-time U20 world champion, shared the news in an emotional Instagram post, citing health problems.
“After years of hard work, challenges, and victories, after honoring my country and raising its flag on the international stage, fulfilling my dream and winning an Olympic medal, I have made the hardest decision of my athletic life — I officially announce my retirement,” wrote Elsayed.
His bronze in Tokyo marked a historic achievement for Egypt — the country's first Greco-Roman wrestling medal since 2012 and only the third since 1960. On his way to the podium, Elsayed won tense matches, including a dramatic victory over Armenian wrestler Karen Aslanyan (7:7 on criteria), and defeated Russia’s Artem Surkov (1:1) in the bronze medal bout.

Elsayed is also remembered by Armenian fans for his 2023 World Championships match against Slavik Galstyan, where he lost 7:8 in a thrilling contest.
Despite his Tokyo success, the Paris Olympics turned into a disappointment for the Egyptian, as he was eliminated in the opening round.
“Wrestling was more than a sport for me. It was my life, my passion, my anchor in the hardest times. I thank God for every minute on the mat, for every moment of pride and every word of support,” wrote Elsayed, expressing gratitude to his coaches, teammates, and supporters.
