Saudi Arabia Football Federation president resigns after World Cup 2026 failure

Saudi Arabian Football Federation president Yasser Al-Misehal has announced his resignation following the national team’s disappointing performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Saudi Arabia failed to reach the knockout stage, finishing bottom of its group. The team collected only 2 points and fell short of its main objective — continuing its campaign in the knockout rounds.

Al-Misehal addressed the fans on social media and said he takes full responsibility for the result.

“My colleagues on the board of directors and I made every possible effort to develop Saudi football and tried to meet the expectations of our country and our supporters. However, failing to reach the next round of the World Cup is a result that does not match our shared ambitions. I take full responsibility and apologize to everyone who hoped to see the national team in a more worthy position,” Al-Misehal wrote.

He also noted that his decision to step down was linked to the need to open a new chapter in the federation’s development. The process of electing a new board of directors is expected to begin soon.

“I am leaving my position, but I will continue to serve my country and support everything that contributes to the development and success of Saudi sport. I thank everyone who supported us on this journey, as well as our fans. I apologize if we did not meet your expectations,” the former federation chief added.

Saudi Arabia ended its World Cup 2026 campaign after the group stage. The result was a major disappointment for a team that had hoped to fight for a place in the playoffs.
