Portugal stormed into the semifinals of the UEFA Futsal Euro 2026 with a dominant 8–2 victory over Belgium in the quarterfinal match held in Ljubljana.
Just like in their opening group match, Portugal conceded first — an own goal by Pany Varela in the 9th minute. But the reigning champions quickly recovered and took control of the game. The goals came from:
-
Bruno Coelho (13')
-
Pany Varela (16', 25', 40')
-
André Coelho (19')
-
Rúben Gonçalves (23')
-
Lúcio Júnior (29')
-
Pauleta (40')
Belgium’s goals came via the own goal and a strike by Aabbou in the 33rd minute.
Pany Varela’s Record
36-year-old Pany Varela was named Player of the Match by UEFA’s technical group. He became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in Futsal Euro final tournaments: 36 years and 341 days. The previous record was held by Javi Rodríguez (35) since 2010.
Next Opponent — France
On February 4, Portugal will face France in the semifinal. It will be a clash between seasoned champions and a rapidly improving side. Notably, Portugal have won all 10 previous encounters, though the last was back in 2019.
André Coelho, goalscorer:
“We’re used to these matches — we play in big clubs and have major international experience. Today we were stronger than Belgium.”
Later today, Spain and Italy will contest the final quarterfinal match.
