After a confident victory over Armenia in Yerevan, the Portuguese national team traveled to Budapest, where they narrowly defeated Hungary 3–2 in a tense battle.
The second-round Group F match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers didn’t go smoothly for Cristiano Ronaldo. In the 21st minute, the hosts took the lead thanks to a goal from Barnabás Varga. However, in the 36th minute, Bernardo Silva equalized after a pass from João Cancelo.
Early in the second half, Portugal went ahead: in the 58th minute, Ronaldo converted a penalty and became the all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifying history. This goal was his 39th, allowing the Portuguese captain to equal the record of former Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz.
But Hungary refused to give up on home soil. In the 84th minute, Varga scored his second goal to level the score. However, just two minutes later, Portugal regained the lead — João Cancelo scored the winning goal, assisted by Bernardo Silva.
Thanks to this result, Armenia holds second place in Group F after two rounds with 3 points. In this round, the team defeated Ireland 2–1 in Yerevan.
Armenia will play its next match on October 11 in Budapest against Hungary. The hosts will be without Barnabás Varga, who scored twice against Portugal, as he will miss the game due to yellow card accumulation.
