Paraguay sensationally knock out Germany and reach the World Cup 2026 Round of 16

Paraguay produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 World Cup knockout stage. The South American side defeated Germany in a penalty shootout and advanced to the Round of 16.

Regular and extra time ended in a 1-1 draw. The winner was decided only in the penalty shootout, where Paraguay prevailed 4-3.

The hero of the match was goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who plays for Argentine club San Lorenzo. The Paraguay goalkeeper saved two penalties in the shootout and effectively delivered a historic victory for his team. Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer managed to save one penalty, but it was not enough for the German national team.

Jose Canale’s attempt proved decisive. Paraguay had several chances to close out the shootout earlier, but eventually sealed the win at the third time of asking. After Canale converted his penalty, Germany were eliminated from the tournament, while Paraguay continued their campaign in the Round of 16.

For Paraguay, this victory was especially symbolic. The same two teams met in the Round of 16 at the 2002 World Cup, when Germany won 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Oliver Neuville. Twenty-four years later, Paraguay took revenge and knocked out one of the tournament favorites.

With the penalty shootout tied at 3-3, Tah missed for Germany, while Jose Canale scored the winning penalty. The final shootout score was 4-3 in Paraguay’s favor.

In the Round of 16, Paraguay will face the winner of the France vs Sweden tie.
