All U17 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Champions Decided: Results from the Tournament in Baku

The U17 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships concluded in Baku on July 29. Following the final day of competition, all champions and medalists across the tournament’s ten weight categories were confirmed.

The final bouts in the 45 kg, 51 kg, 60 kg, 71 kg and 92 kg weight categories took place on the last day of the World Championships.

Russia won the overall team standings. Russian wrestlers claimed two gold medals and scored 127 points. Azerbaijan finished second with 107 points, although the host nation did not win a single gold medal. Iran completed the top three with 96 points and two gold medals.

Representatives of Armenia, Ukraine, the United States, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Poland each won one gold medal.

Armenia Wins Three Medals at the U17 World Championships

The Armenian national team finished eighth in the overall team standings with 77 points. Armenian wrestlers won three medals: one gold and two bronze.

Armenia’s greatest success came through Janes Nazaryan, who competed in the 71 kg weight category. In the final, the Armenian wrestler defeated Russia’s Aslan Dzuev to become a U17 world champion for the second time.

Following Nazaryan’s victory, the Armenian national anthem was played in Baku.

Ararat Avetisyan won a bronze medal in the 48 kg category, while Gevorg Harutyunyan claimed bronze in the 51 kg category.

Russia therefore won the team standings at the U17 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships. Despite finishing eighth overall, Armenia ended the tournament with three medals, including a gold won by two-time world champion Janes Nazaryan.

Last year, Armenia finished ninth, also winning one gold and two bronze medals.
