An unusual incident occurred in the final of the 72 kg weight category at the 2025 European Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships. United World Wrestling (UWW) acknowledged a refereeing error made during the match and declared two champions in this weight category.
In the decisive bout, Levente Levai from Hungary faced Ibrahim Ghanem from France. The Hungarian wrestler was awarded the victory with a 4:4 score — based on the last point scored rule. However, immediately after the match, Ghanem strongly protested, claiming there was a mistake in the official score sheet.
The controversial moment came after the third passivity call. Instead of simply giving Levai the choice of position without awarding points, the referees mistakenly gave him one point. This action directly affected the final score. With proper refereeing, Ghanem should have won the bout 4:3.
The French delegation filed an official protest, and several hours after the final, UWW representatives admitted the error. As a result, an unprecedented decision was made: both finalists — Levente Levai and Ibrahim Ghanem — were declared 2025 European Champions in the 72 kg weight category.
