The Republic of Ireland has suffered a major setback ahead of their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Armenia. AZ Alkmaar forward Troy Parrott will not be able to take part in the game.
The 23-year-old striker is still recovering from an injury, and his club has refused to release him for international duty.
Parrott is one of the key players of the national team: this season he has scored 10 goals in 7 matches for AZ, while last season he netted 20 times. Recently, he has been a regular starter for Ireland.
Thus, head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson has only one attacking option left — Roma’s Evan Ferguson, who is also in excellent form.
The match Armenia vs. Ireland will take place on September 9 in Yerevan. Before that, on September 6, Armenia will play Portugal, while Ireland will face Hungary.
