Armenia and Iran have agreed to strengthen cooperation in sports and youth affairs. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Yerevan, paving the way for joint training camps, competitions, and exchanges of expertise between sports organizations in the two countries.

The agreement was signed by Armenia's Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, Zhanna Andreasyan, and Iran's Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Ahmad Donyamali.

The memorandum aims to strengthen bilateral sporting ties and establish a framework for joint programs involving national teams, clubs, coaches, and young athletes.

Which sports will be prioritized?

One of the main areas of cooperation will be the organization of joint training camps and competitions. The two countries plan to focus particularly on six sporting disciplines:

  • Wrestling

  • Weightlifting

  • Football

  • Boxing

  • Chess

  • Martial arts

The memorandum also includes provisions for exchanging coaches, referees, and sports specialists, organizing professional workshops, developing educational programs, and making use of the scientific expertise available in both countries.

Cooperation in women's sports and youth development

During the meeting, Ahmad Donyamali emphasized the longstanding historical and friendly relations between Armenia and Iran, highlighting Armenia's special place in Tehran's neighborhood policy.

According to the Iranian minister, the two countries should use their existing resources and expertise to implement practical projects in sports and youth affairs.

For her part, Zhanna Andreasyan welcomed the Iranian proposals and confirmed Armenia's readiness to organize joint training camps, strengthen cooperation between specialized educational institutions, and develop coaching education programs.

The two sides also paid particular attention to the development of women's sports, as well as joint events and initiatives for young people.

The signed memorandum establishes an official framework for regular cooperation between sports federations and organizations in Armenia and Iran.

However, specific dates for joint training camps, competitions, and other activities have not yet been announced. Organizing these events will be the next stage in implementing the agreements reached by the two countries.
