In a match of the Mexican Women’s Football Championship, a goal was scored that is already being called one of the most spectacular in history. The scorer was Mexican player Lizbeth Ovalle, with an assist from renowned Spanish footballer Jennifer Hermoso. Ovalle’s goal reminded fans of Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s famous scorpion kick, which the Armenian midfielder scored while playing for Manchester United in 2016.
After a solo run down the right flank, Jennifer Hermoso found an open space and sent a cross into Chivas’ penalty area. Lizbeth Ovalle, nicknamed "La Maga" (The Magician), was already preparing for the shot. She turned in midair and struck the ball with her heel, sending it into the far corner of the net. Goalkeeper Blanca Félix was unable to prevent the goal, which instantly went viral.
Ovalle’s goal drew comparisons to Mkhitaryan’s scorpion kick, which he scored in a Premier League match for Manchester United against Sunderland. Both goals were executed midair with an unconventional technique.
Ovalle’s goal looked like a mirror image of Mkhitaryan’s.
