Inter Milan forward Mehdi Taremi was stranded in Tehran and could not join his team for the Club World Cup taking place in the USA.
Taremi had been with the Iranian national team and played in the World Cup qualifier against North Korea on June 10 — Iran won 3-0, with Taremi scoring a goal and providing an assist.
According to the initial plan, he was set to fly to Los Angeles on June 14, but flights were canceled due to the outbreak of military conflict between Iran and Israel. Taremi remains in Tehran with his family.
Without Taremi, Inter played their first match of the Club World Cup on June 20 against Mexico’s Monterrey. The game ended in a 1–1 draw. Young striker Sebastiano Esposito replaced Taremi in the starting lineup. Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan also took part in the match, playing 78 minutes.
