Malkhas Amoyan has been recognized as the Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year according to the Comeback Wrestlers of the Year 2025 awards.
Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Malkhas Amoyan received the prestigious Comeback of the Year award following the results of the 2025 season. He earned special recognition for his impressive return to the top of world wrestling after several difficult years marked by injuries and a change of weight category.
After winning the world championship title at the 2021 World Championships in Oslo in the 72 kg division, Amoyan decided to move up to the 77 kg category. The transition proved challenging: in 2022 and 2023, he fell just one bout short of gold at the World Championships, while at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games he had to settle for bronze medals on three occasions.
The turning point came in 2025. According to experts, the 26-year-old Amoyan delivered one of the most outstanding performances in Greco-Roman wrestling at the World Championships in Zagreb. The highlight of the tournament was his dominant 9–1 victory in the final over reigning Olympic champion Nao Kusaka of Japan, which earned the Armenian wrestler his second world title.
Amoyan himself emphasized the special significance of this achievement. He noted that after two years of battling injuries, he was able to approach the World Championships fully prepared, both physically and mentally. The victory in Zagreb not only marked his return to the top but also proved that he is capable of winning at the highest level in a new weight category.
