On July 6, the World Boxing Cup: Astana 2025 stage concluded in the capital of Kazakhstan. The tournament, held at the Zhaksylyk Ushkempirov Martial Arts Palace, brought together over 400 athletes from dozens of countries. Over the course of the week, medals were contested in 20 weight categories—10 for men and 10 for women. A total of 80 boxers stepped onto the podium.
Team Armenia did not take part in the tournament.
The host nation emerged as the overall winner. Kazakhstan claimed 8 gold medals and took first place in the team standings. Brazil finished second with four victories, while India came third, earning three golds. France, Finland, Uzbekistan, Norway, and Australia each won one title.
Men: Kazakhstan and Brazil as power centers
Kazakh boxers reached 7 of the 10 men’s finals and won 5 of them. Sanjar Tashkenbay (50 kg), Sabyrkhan Makhmud (55 kg, final was not held), Sabyrzhan Akkalyk (75 kg), Bekzad Nurdauletov (85 kg), and Aybek Oralbay (+90 kg) proudly raised the Kazakh flag on the top step of the podium. Nurdauletov and Oralbay especially impressed with dominant 5:0 wins.
Brazil made a strong statement as well: Luis Gabriel do Nascimento (60 kg), Yuri Falcão dos Reis (65 kg), Kaian Oliveira Reis (70 kg), and Isaias Santos Ribeiro Filho (90 kg) all won gold. Reis stood out with a commanding 5:0 victory over Indian boxer Hitesh.
Among the surprises was Frenchman Yojerlin Cesar (80 kg), who decisively defeated Kazakhstan’s Nurbek Oralbay in the final.
Women: India and Kazakhstan dominate
In the women’s events, India and Kazakhstan led the competition. Indian boxers won three consecutive Olympic weight classes—Sakshi (54 kg), Jaismine (57 kg), and Nupur (+80 kg). Sakshi’s 5:0 win over American Jocelyn Perez was particularly convincing.
Kazakhstan also had a strong showing with three golds: Nazym Kyzaibai (48 kg), Viktoria Grafeeva (60 kg), and Natalia Bogdanova (70 kg), each winning tough bouts.
Unexpected champions included Finland’s Pihla Kaivo-Oja (51 kg), who defeated Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova, and Australia’s Esseta Flint (80 kg), who overcame Indian star Pooja Rani. Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad (75 kg) was especially impressive in her clean victory over veteran Nadezhda Ryabets.
Next up: World Championships in Liverpool
The Astana event was the third stage of the World Cup after Brazil and Czechia. The series will conclude with a final later this year. The next major competition will be the 2025 World Boxing Championships in Liverpool (September 4–14), set to be the biggest Olympic-style boxing event in the UK since the London 2012 Olympics.
