Karen Khachanov reaches US Open-2026 quarterfinals after five-set win over Learner Tien

Russian tennis player of Armenian descent Karen Khachanov (ATP 50) has reached the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament US Open-2026.

In the round of 16, Khachanov defeated American Learner Tien (ATP 15) in a dramatic five-set battle — 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-4.

The match became a real test for Khachanov. After losing the third set, Karen managed to turn the momentum around, comfortably won the fourth set and showed his experience and composure in the deciding set to secure a crucial victory.

For Khachanov, this is his first US Open quarterfinal in four years and the seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career.

After the match, Khachanov jokingly responded to a question about facing younger opponents. Asked whether he enjoyed showing the young players “who is boss” after beating 20-year-old Tien and preparing to face 21-year-old Alexander Blockx, Karen replied:

“But I’m young as well. I mean, what are you talking about?”

In the US Open-2026 quarterfinal, Khachanov will face Belgian Alexander Blockx (ATP 34).

Other players who have already reached the quarterfinals include Americans Frances Tiafoe (ATP 12), Alex Michelsen (ATP 46), Ben Shelton (ATP 9), and Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 3).

The tournament in New York could become another important step in Khachanov’s comeback among the world’s top tennis players.
