From January 29 to February 1, Krasnoyarsk hosts one of the most prestigious freestyle wrestling tournaments in the world calendar — the Ivan Yarygin International Cup. After the first day of competition, finalists were determined in several men’s and women’s weight classes.
The main story of the day was a major upset at 57 kg.
Men’s Freestyle – 57 kg
Reigning world champion Han Chong Song (North Korea) suffered a shocking heavy semifinal loss to Mongolia’s Batkhuyagiin Mönkh-Erdene — 1:13.
The storyline is even more intriguing: Han defeated Arsen Harutyunyan in the semifinals of the 2025 World Championships, while Harutyunyan had previously beaten Batkhuu. However, in Krasnoyarsk, the Mongolian wrestler looked far more powerful and advanced confidently to the final.
Final: Batkhuyagiin vs Musa Mekhtikhanov (Dagestan)
Other finals set on Day 1:
-
61 kg: Chermen Tavitov vs Kezhik Mongush
-
70 kg: David Baev vs Viktor Rassadin
Women’s Freestyle Finals
-
50 kg: Natalia Varakina vs Myonggyong Won
-
55 kg: Alexandra Skirenko vs Laura Almanganbetova
-
59 kg: Viktoria Khusainova vs Svetlana Lipatova
-
65 kg: Khanum Velieva vs Ksenia Tsiareenia
Final bouts in these weights will take place on January 30.
The Yarygin Cup traditionally marks one of the toughest starts to the season, and Day 1 already proved the tournament will deliver major upsets and high-level clashes.
