The matchday 18 clash in La Liga became a true breakthrough for Real Madrid’s 21-year-old forward Gonzalo García. Given a place in the starting lineup due to Kylian Mbappé’s injury, the young striker seized his chance to the fullest and emerged as the main hero of the evening at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Real Madrid cruised to a convincing 5–1 victory over Real Betis, with García scoring a hat-trick and netting his first goals in the Spanish league. He had previously found the back of the net in the Copa del Rey and at the Club World Cup, but this match marked his moment of true recognition on the domestic stage.
After the final whistle, the forward did not hide his emotions:
“Starting the year like this… my first goal and my first hat-trick at the Bernabéu. It was a special night. Thank you to all the Madridistas for the support,” García wrote on social media.

This hat-trick etched the striker’s name into the club’s history. In the 21st century, he became only the second Real Madrid player to score three goals in a match in which he himself opened the scoring — a feat previously achieved only by Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2006.
Interestingly, defender Fran García also scored in the same match, but the two players are not related. Fran hails from Bolaños de Calatrava and is a cousin of Atlético Madrid captain Koke, while Gonzalo is a native Madrileño. Moreover, the striker has a rather unusual background: he is the great-grandson of legendary actress Rita Hayworth and a descendant of the famous Cancino dancing dynasty.
A Brief Look at Gonzalo García’s Journey
Gonzalo García is a product of La Fábrica. After passing through several youth academies, he joined Real Madrid’s system as a teenager and worked his way from the youth teams to Castilla, where he became one of the most prolific players. His breakthrough season came when he equaled Mariano Díaz’s record for goals scored for Castilla, after which he established himself in the first team and extended his contract until 2030.
On the international stage, García is also in the spotlight: he is regularly called up to Spain’s youth national teams and is considered one of the most promising forwards of his generation.
Present and Future
In the 2025/26 season, Gonzalo García has already made 18 appearances for Real Madrid across all competitions, scoring 3 goals and providing one assist. His versatility, ability to play in various attacking positions, and composure in decisive moments make him a valuable option for the coaching staff.
The hat-trick against Betis could become not just a bright episode, but the starting point of a great career. It seems that Real Madrid have found a new hero — and his name is Gonzalo García.
