Gevorg Harutyunyan Wins Bronze at the U17 World Championships in Baku

Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Gevorg Harutyunyan has won a bronze medal at the U17 World Championships taking place in Baku.

Competing in the 51 kg weight category, Harutyunyan demonstrated great character and determination. The Armenian wrestler lost to an Azerbaijani opponent in the quarterfinals amid controversial officiating but was given the opportunity to continue competing for a medal.

In the repechage bout, Gevorg defeated the reigning world champion from Kazakhstan. He then delivered a confident performance in the bronze-medal match against Georgia’s Saba Abashidze, not conceding a single point and securing a 5–0 victory.

Bunyod Hasanov of Uzbekistan became the world champion in the 51 kg category after defeating his Azerbaijani opponent 9–0 in the final.

Harutyunyan’s bronze medal can rightfully be considered as valuable as gold. The athlete had not previously become Armenian champion and was not selected for the national team at the European Championships. However, he made the most of the opportunity given to him at the World Championships.

Gevorg Harutyunyan’s medal was Armenia’s second award at the tournament, following Ararat Avetisyan’s bronze. Armenian fans can now look forward to the final featuring Janes Nazaryan, who competes in the 71 kg weight category.
