Henrikh Mkhitaryan Ready for the Champions League Final: A Chance to Change History

Henrikh Mkhitaryan Ready for the Champions League Final: A Chance to Change History
Football

At the twilight of his career, Henrikh Mkhitaryan is given the opportunity he has waited for all his life. The Champions League final against PSG is more than just a match—it’s a chance to rewrite his footballing destiny. At 36, the Armenian midfielder is not planning to miss what could be his last big opportunity.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Mkhitaryan is already training with the group and will be fully fit to play against PSG. If needed, he is ready to go the full 120 minutes.

Two years ago, in the final against Manchester City in Istanbul, Mkhitaryan was one of the unlucky ones—a muscle injury suffered in the semifinal against Milan kept him out of the starting lineup, and he only appeared in the closing minutes. Inter lost 0–1, and Mkhitaryan was left with a feeling of a missed opportunity. But this year, he is determined to change everything.

The Final Mkhitaryan Has Been Waiting For—Perhaps His Last Chance

The match in Munich is not just another European final for Mkhitaryan. It’s a symbolic return—a chance to make his mark in a truly historic event. He previously won the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017 and the Conference League with Roma in 2022. However, he missed the 2019 Europa League final with Arsenal in Baku due to political reasons: the participation of an Armenian player in Azerbaijan was considered unsafe due to tensions between the countries. Once again, Mkhitaryan was left out of a major event.

This season, Simone Inzaghi has shown more trust in Mkhitaryan than ever before: he ranks in Inter’s top 4 players by minutes played, behind only Bastoni, Barella, and Lautaro. Despite his age, Mkhitaryan remains a key figure in the midfield and is likely to start the final alongside Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Nicolò Barella.

In the last Serie A match against Como, Mkhitaryan was left on the bench to stay fresh for the decisive game. The muscle issues that had arisen earlier in May are now behind him, and he is fully ready for the final.

Mkhitaryan’s Future—To Be Decided After the Match

Mkhitaryan’s contract with Inter runs until 2026, but the player himself admits he might retire this summer. He says this season has been one of the most difficult of his life. There’s a possibility that he could stay at the club for another year, taking on a mentor role for younger midfielders, but all discussions are on hold until after the final.

On the road to Munich, Mkhitaryan missed only two matches—against Feyenoord and Bayer—and played a key role in helping Inter reach the decisive stage of the tournament.

Saturday’s final may well be the last act in Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s great career. And he is ready to give his all to finally lift the trophy he has chased his entire life.

So far this season, Mkhitaryan has played in 48 matches, scoring once and providing 5 assists.
