France booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup without major problems. Didier Deschamps’ side comfortably defeated Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 and kept alive their bid to reach a third consecutive World Cup final.

The main hero of the match was Kylian Mbappe, who scored twice. Bradley Barcola added another goal for France, while Michael Olise registered two assists.

France had a clear advantage from the opening minutes and created a number of chances in front of Sweden’s goal. The Swedish team held firm for much of the first half, but Mbappe eventually opened the scoring late in the half. The France captain received the ball inside the box, beat his marker and fired a precise shot into the corner.

After the break, France quickly removed any doubts about the winner. Olise played a delicate pass into Barcola’s path, and the forward confidently sent the ball into the net. It was already Barcola’s second goal of the tournament, while Olise recorded his fourth assist at the 2026 World Cup.

Later, the Olise-Mbappe connection worked once again. The midfielder slipped another accurate pass through to his captain, and Mbappe scored his sixth goal of the tournament, drawing level with Lionel Messi in the 2026 World Cup scoring race. In addition, Mbappe moved to 18 career World Cup goals and is now just one goal behind Messi’s record.

France’s dominance was also clear in the statistics: Deschamps’ team had 25 shots on goal, while Sweden managed only six attempts. The Swedes tried to break forward on the counter at times, but they were unable to seriously change the course of the match.

In the next round, France will face Paraguay, who earlier pulled off a sensational penalty shootout win over Germany. The Round of 16 match will take place on July 4 in Philadelphia.

France — Sweden — 3-0

Goals: Mbappe, Barcola, Mbappe.
