Legendary Italian defender and 2006 World Cup champion Fabio Cannavaro has been appointed as the new head coach of the Uzbekistan national football team.
The Italian specialist will prepare the team for the historic 2026 World Cup, for which Uzbekistan has qualified for the first time in its history.
Cannavaro replaces Timur Kapadze, under whose leadership the team secured its first-ever World Cup berth.
Cannavaro’s last managerial job was at Dinamo Zagreb, where he worked until recently. After his departure, the team was taken over by current Armenian club Noah’s head coach, Sandro Perković.
Cannavaro’s appointment has become one of the most high-profile coaching moves in Asian football, and the Uzbekistan Football Federation hopes that the Italian’s experience will help the national team perform with honor at the World Cup.
