Elina Avanesyan reaches WTA Merida semifinals
Tennis

Armenian tennis player Elina Avanesyan continues to impress at the WTA 250 tournament in Merida. In a tense quarterfinal match, she defeated Australian athlete Maya Join, who was considered the favorite. The match ended with a score of 4:6, 6:2, 6:0 in favor of Avanesyan.

The match did not start easily for Elina, as she lost the first set, allowing Join to capitalize on her break opportunities. However, in the second set, the Armenian tennis player turned the game around, significantly improving her first serve percentage and confidently converting break points. In the decisive third set, Avanesyan demonstrated total dominance, not allowing her opponent to win a single game.

The match statistics speak for themselves: Elina hit one ace compared to none from Join, committed fewer double faults (4 versus 8), and significantly outperformed her opponent in first serve points won (58% versus 46%). Additionally, she won 90 points in total compared to Join’s 69, highlighting her clear superiority on the court.

In the semifinals, Avanesyan will face the winner of the match between American Emma Navarro (world No. 10) and Turkish representative Zeynep Sönmez (ranked 88th in the WTA rankings).
