Armenian tennis player Elina Avanesyan (WTA 40) ended her campaign at the 2025 French Open in the first round, suffering a heavy defeat to Ukrainian Angelina Kalinina (WTA 113). The match ended in straight sets — 1:6, 2:6.
The encounter on the Paris clay lasted just 1 hour and 15 minutes. Avanesyan struggled heavily on serve, winning only 37% of points on her first delivery. She also committed three double faults and converted just two out of eight break points. Kalinina, in contrast, recorded one ace, two double faults, and won six games on her opponent’s serve.
Interestingly, Avanesyan had comfortably beaten Kalinina on grass last season, but this time the Ukrainian took convincing revenge on the clay of Roland Garros.
This marks the fourth consecutive loss for Avanesyan, who has yet to win a single clay-court match this season.
In the second round, Kalinina will face the winner of the match between Elise Mertens (Belgium, WTA 24) and Loïs Boisson (France, WTA 361).
