Armenian tennis player Elina Avanesyan has announced that she is temporarily pausing her career because of health issues. In March, she was diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis, the consequences of which affected her physical condition and performances.
In her social media statement, the 22-year-old athlete admitted that she had long felt exhausted and without energy, struggling even with the simplest training sessions. The situation worsened with injuries: during the Miami tournament, Avanesyan suffered a wrist injury, followed later by a shoulder problem. According to her, these setbacks came one after another, slowing down her recovery after the illness.
“I felt weak and unable to compete, which was incredibly frustrating. But I have learned a lot about patience, resilience, and how deeply I truly love tennis,” the player said.
She added that returning to the court even for individual matches was an important step forward, but competing at her previous level is still not possible.
Avanesyan thanked her fans for their support during this difficult period:
“Your kind words mean more to me than I can express. They give me strength on tough days and remind me why I keep fighting.”
The tennis player stressed that she views this as only a temporary break and believes in her comeback:
“I look forward to the moment when I can compete again without pain, healthy, and stronger than ever.”
Currently, Avanesyan is ranked No. 104 in the WTA rankings, although at the start of 2025 she was inside the Top 40.
